Neel on the Reel: A Journey from Radio Jockey to Versatile Entertainer
From radio jockey to versatile entertainer, Neel’s journey reflects passion, adaptability, and the evolving creative opportunities within Bangladesh’s entertainment industry. Her journey began a decade ago as a radio jockey, gradually transitioning into acting while also taking on the role of partnership officer at the popular OTT platform, Chorki.In an exclusive interview with The Daily Star, Neel shared insights about her career, upcoming projects, and personal experiences. "I've always been involved in cultural activities like acting, recitation, and debate," she said. "I started my career as an anchor in 2015 while I was still a student, focusing specifically on that show."Her breakthrough came in 2018 when she began hosting cricket shows, which earned her widespread recognition. "Cricket is a national craze, and hosting those shows made people notice me. That's when I started getting acting offers," she recalled.Neel's acting debut came in 2019 with Badrul Anam Saud's "Okkhor Theke Uthe Asha Manush," alongside industry veterans Suborna Mustafa and Afzal Hossain. She has since worked on various projects like Nur Imran Mithu's "Shohore Tukro Rod," Raihan Rafi's "Nishwas," and Farhad Ahmed's Women's Day special "Criminals," all streaming on different OTT platforms.Despite her foray into acting, Neel considers anchoring her priority. "Anchoring is my comfort zone, while acting is something I pursue out of passion. I'm fortunate not to rely on acting for financial reasons, allowing me to be selective with roles and stories," she explained.Neel is known for her steady and thoughtful approach to her career. "I believe in taking one step at a time. Many ask why I don't take on more acting roles or make acting my ultimate goal, but I don't think that should be the case for everyone," she said.Currently, Neel hosts the infotainment show "It's Amazing," which has aired 750 episodes. She admires personalities like Ellen DeGeneres, Oprah Winfrey, Jimmy Kimmel, Anisul Haque, and Rumana Malik Munmun, who have excelled as anchors. "I enjoy the pace of my career and don't like to rush into anything," she said.Neel also shares a close bond with fellow television hosts Srabonno Towhida and Mousumi Mou. Despite being competitors, they have supported each other through personal challenges. "Srabonno apu and Mou are like family. They stood by me during the most critical time of my life, and since then, we've been great friends," she said.Amidst her busy schedule, Neel recently completed shooting a music video for the Shironamhin band's upcoming song "Ei Obelay 2." She is also in talks with Rafa for a music album based on her poetry book "Hariye Jabar Shuru," released in 2020.Additionally, Neel has finished a web project co-directed by Wahid Tarek and Imtiaz Sazib. "The plot revolves around the life of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, seen through the eyes of a spy who followed him until his assassination. I play a young student in the filmmaking department. The storyline is intriguing, though the platform for release is yet to be decided," she revealed.
